"Tour of the Gila" is an annual cycling event in southwest New Mexico which takes place in Silver City and surrounding areas. Five days of racing with the grand finale, the Gila Monster race taking the cyclist through the Gila National Forest as they endure grueling elevation changes and ending in the small mining ghost town community of Pinos Altos. Extra publicity has been gained for the "Tour of the Gila" in recent years with some very well known names in the cycling world such as Lance Armstrong and Levi Leipheimer among others, having been in attendance in 2009 & 2010 providing even more excitement for this annual event.
